Rohmer, Sax: The Hand of Fu Manchu
Written in 1917, London's yellow fogs are everpresent. Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie are convinced that Dr. Fu Manchu (the Mogul of Malevolence) has finally been killed (in a previous book). But no. Smith sees Dr. Fu Manchu, and Petrie is forced to assist in an operation on him to remove the bullet that is still lodged in his skull. In the end it appears as if Fu Manchu might have died in a storm at sea, but we know better for there are many more books after this one (the third in a series of thirteen). This would be a perfect action movie (except for lack of car chases and helicopters blowing up) as there is non-stop action where either Smith or Petrie are about to get killed but somehow are saved from burning buildings, dungeons, secret hide-outs, etc.
